What is Firebase Analytics, and what can it tell you about your app?
It works like a footfall counter and a notebook at a shop door: it counts who comes in, then notes which shelves they visit and whether they reach the till.
What it is
Firebase is Google's toolbox for app builders. One of its tools is Google Analytics for Firebase, which most people just call Firebase Analytics. You add a small piece of code, called an SDK, to your app. From then on it records events: little notes like "app opened", "sign-up finished" or "item bought".
The data appears in Google Analytics, in the same kind of reports used for websites. Google describes it on the Firebase Analytics page as an app measurement tool available at no charge.
How it works, simply
- Install the SDK. A developer adds Firebase to the iOS, Android, web, Unity or C++ project.
- Automatic events start flowing. Some basics, like the first time someone opens the app and each session, are recorded without extra work.
- Add your own events. You decide what matters: "loan application submitted", "workout completed", "subscription started".
- Read the reports. See how many people reach each step, where they drop off and which groups stay longest.
Each event can carry extra details called parameters, such as the price of an item or the name of a screen. That is how you answer questions like "which plan do people buy most?"
What it is good for
- Free, deep usage data. Google says reporting is unlimited for up to 500 distinct event types, which is plenty for most apps.
- Feeding Google Ads. You can link Firebase to Google Ads so App campaigns optimize for real actions, like purchases, instead of installs.
- Working with other Firebase tools. It links to Remote Config for A/B tests, Crashlytics for crashes and AdMob for in-app ads.
- Raw data export. You can send raw events to BigQuery, Google's data warehouse, for custom analysis.
When it is not enough on its own
- Many ad networks at once. Firebase is strongest inside Google's world. If you also run Meta, TikTok and Apple Ads, you usually want a neutral measurement partner such as AppsFlyer to decide which network gets credit for each install.
- Fraud protection. Firebase is not built to catch fake installs from bad ad traffic. Dedicated attribution tools offer this.
- Strict data rules. Some regulated apps, like health or finance apps, must check carefully what data they send to any third party, including Google. Plan this with your legal adviser.
Firebase Analytics vs a mobile measurement partner
| Firebase Analytics | MMP (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Understand what users do inside the app | Work out which ad brought each user |
| Price | No charge | Usually paid, often with a free starter tier |
| Works across ad networks | Best with Google products | Built to be neutral across many networks |
| Fraud filtering | Not a core feature | Usually included or offered as an add-on |
| Typical use | Product decisions, funnels, retention | Ad budget decisions, ROI by channel |
Many apps run both. Firebase answers "what happens in my app?" and the MMP answers "which ad was worth the money?"
What it means for cost and timeline
The tool is free, so the cost is developer time. Adding the SDK takes little time. The real work is planning your events well: deciding names, which steps matter, and testing that every event fires correctly. A clear event plan written before coding saves weeks of messy data later. Changes need a new app release, so getting it right early matters.
How Appryze uses Firebase Analytics
When we build an app, we write an event plan with you, set up Firebase so the key steps are tracked from day one, and connect it to Google Ads when you are ready to advertise. If you run several ad channels, we pair it with an MMP. You keep ownership of the Firebase project. Our app marketing service explains how we use this data to grow apps, and our Firebase guide covers the wider platform.
Common questions
Is Firebase Analytics really free?
Yes. Google offers Google Analytics for Firebase at no charge, with unlimited reporting for up to 500 distinct event types. Some connected services, such as large BigQuery workloads, can create costs on your Google Cloud bill, so check those separately.
Is Firebase Analytics the same as Google Analytics?
They are closely linked. Firebase Analytics is the app-side SDK, and the data shows up in a Google Analytics property, the same product used for websites. So you install Firebase in the app and read the reports in Google Analytics.
Can Firebase Analytics replace AppsFlyer or Adjust?
For a small app that only advertises on Google, often yes. Once you spend on several networks like Meta, TikTok and Apple Ads, a neutral mobile measurement partner usually gives fairer credit across channels and adds fraud protection that Firebase does not focus on.
Does Firebase Analytics work on iPhone apps?
Yes. It supports iOS and Android apps, plus web, Unity and C++. On iPhone, Apple's privacy rules limit some ad-related tracking, but in-app usage events like sign-ups and purchases are still recorded normally.
