What is Google Ads, and how does it bring people to your app?
Think of a shop assistant who can stand in every aisle of the world's biggest mall at once. You tell them what a new customer is worth to you, and they point the right shoppers toward your door.
Google Ads in one minute
Google Ads is the account where you buy advertising on Google. Most people know it for the small "Sponsored" results above a normal search. Shops and service businesses use those search ads to get website visits and phone calls.
Apps get their own tool inside Google Ads, called App campaigns. You may hear older marketers call them "Universal App Campaigns" or "UAC". It is the same idea with a newer name. Google offers three kinds: App campaigns for installs (new users), for engagement (bringing back people who already have the app) and for pre-registration (letting Android users sign up before launch).
How an App campaign works
The big difference from normal ads is that you do not build each ad by hand. You hand Google a box of ingredients and it does the cooking.
- Link your app. It must already be live on Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Add your assets. A few short lines of text, some images and, ideally, a few videos. Google can also borrow from your store listing.
- Set a budget and a goal. For example, "get installs" or "get people who finish sign-up". You also give a target cost, which is the price you are happy to pay for each result.
- Let it learn. Google mixes your text, images and videos into many ad versions, tests them in many places and slowly shifts money toward what works.
Your job is to feed it good ingredients and a clear signal of what a "good user" means. That signal comes from in-app events, usually sent through Firebase Analytics or a measurement tool.
Where your ads can show up
- Google Search results, including Google's search partners
- Google Play: search results, the home page and "related apps" sections
- YouTube
- Discover, the news feed in the Google app
- The Google Display Network: Gmail, other apps and mobile websites
You cannot hand-pick most of these spots. That is the trade: less control, much more reach. Google's own App campaigns help page lists the current placements and setup rules.
What it is good for
- Android apps. Google owns Google Play, so it sees a lot about what happens after an Android ad. This is usually where App campaigns shine.
- Apps people search for. If someone types "budget planner app" or "loan app", Google can show your ad right at that moment of need.
- Scaling a proven app. Once you know which users pay, you can tell Google to chase more people like them.
When it is not the right first step
- No tracking yet. If the app does not report sign-ups or purchases, Google can only chase cheap installs. Cheap installs often never open the app again.
- Very small test budgets. The system needs enough results each week to learn. A tiny budget can keep it stuck in "learning" for a long time.
- iOS-only apps. Apple limits tracking, so Google gets less detail about iPhone users. It still works, but results are reported through Apple's privacy tools like SKAdNetwork. Many iOS apps start with Apple's own ads instead.
- Apps nobody searches for yet. A brand-new idea with no search demand may do better with eye-catching video on social apps first.
Google App campaigns vs Meta app ads
| Google App campaigns | Meta app ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where people see ads | Search, Play, YouTube, Gmail, other apps | Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, partner apps |
| What the user is doing | Often searching for something | Scrolling and browsing |
| Best at | Catching existing demand, especially on Android | Creating new interest with strong creative |
| Creative that matters most | Text plus short videos in several sizes | Scroll-stopping video and images |
| How much you control | Low: Google picks placements | Medium: more audience and creative control |
Most growing apps end up running both. Our Meta ads guide explains the other side.
What it means for your budget and timeline
There is no fixed price. You pay what the auction decides, and it changes by country, category and season. A finance app in the US will pay much more per user than a casual game in India.
Plan for a learning phase. Many advertisers wait a couple of weeks before judging a new campaign, and avoid big changes during that time. Set aside budget for videos too: campaigns with only text and images usually have fewer places to show. Setup itself is quick, often a day or two, if tracking is already in the app.
How Appryze runs Google Ads for apps
Our founder, Amit Kumar Sharma, has spent 12+ years running growth on Google App Campaigns, Meta and Apple Search Ads for consumer and fintech apps. We set campaigns to chase real actions like sign-ups or payments, not just installs, and the ad account stays in your name. Every app we build includes one month of launch marketing. See our app marketing service for app campaigns, or performance marketing if you also need Google search ads for a website.
Common questions
Is Google Ads the same as Google App campaigns?
Not quite. Google Ads is the whole advertising platform. App campaigns are one campaign type inside it, made only for promoting mobile apps. You use the same Google Ads account, but the setup is simpler and more automated than a normal search campaign.
Can Google Ads promote an iPhone app?
Yes. App campaigns work for apps on the Apple App Store as well as Google Play. Because Apple limits user tracking, results for iPhone users are reported with less detail, so many advertisers judge iOS campaigns differently from Android ones.
Do I need videos for an App campaign?
You can launch without them, but it is not a good idea. Videos unlock more places to show your ads, such as YouTube. Simple screen recordings of the app with clear captions are a fine starting point.
How long before I know if Google Ads works for my app?
Expect a learning period after launch while the system tests ads and audiences. Judge results once the campaign has collected a steady flow of conversions, and look at the quality of users, not only the cost per install.
