What is App Store Optimization, and why does it matter?

In one lineApp Store Optimization (ASO) means improving your app's store page on the Apple App Store and Google Play so more people find it in search and more of those visitors download it.
Think of it like this

ASO is like dressing a shop window. The right sign helps people find the shop, and a clear, tidy window makes them walk in instead of walking past.

What ASO is

Every app has a page in the store: a name, an icon, screenshots, a description and ratings. ASO is the work of making that page better. It has two jobs:

People sometimes call ASO "SEO for apps". That is close, but the store has fewer things you can change, and every one of them matters more.

How app stores decide what to show

Neither Apple nor Google publishes its full ranking formula. Both say they look at how well an app matches the search words and how people respond to it. Apple's App Store search guide names things like text relevance and user behavior, such as downloads and ratings.

In simple terms, the store asks two questions: "Does this app match what the person typed?" and "Do people who see it actually like it?"

Screenshots deserve special care. Most visitors never read the description. They look at the first two or three images and decide.

Custom pages for different people

Both stores now let you show different versions of your page to different groups. Apple calls them custom product pages: you can publish up to 70 extra versions, each with its own screenshots, promotional text and preview videos. You can also assign keywords to a custom page so it can appear in search for those words, according to Apple's custom product pages guide. Google Play offers custom store listings for things like specific countries.

This matters for ads too. A person who taps an ad about "splitting bills" should land on a page that talks about splitting bills, not your generic page. That link between ASO and Apple Ads is one of the easiest wins in app marketing.

What ASO is good for

What ASO cannot fix

ASO vs paid ads

ASO brings free traffic slowly. Paid ads bring traffic fast but cost money every day. They work best together: ads bring visitors, a strong page converts them, and more downloads help organic rank. Our Google Ads guide covers the paid side.

Cost and timeline

ASO itself has no fee from the stores. Your costs are time and design: keyword research, new screenshots and testing. A first round of fixes can often be done in one or two weeks, then improved every month. Paid ASO tools exist for keyword research, but a small app can start without them.

How Appryze does ASO

Every app we build comes with free Google Play and App Store submission, and we write the first store listing with search in mind instead of as an afterthought. After launch, we test screenshots and match custom pages to ad campaigns. Find out more on our app marketing page.

Common questions

How long does ASO take to work?

Usually weeks, not days. Stores need time to re-index your text and to see how new visitors react to your page. Make one set of clear changes, wait long enough to measure, and then adjust. Testing tools inside each store help you compare versions.

Is ASO the same on Apple and Google Play?

The goals are the same, but the details differ. Apple has a hidden keyword field and does not list the long description as a search factor. Google Play has no keyword field and reads your full description, so natural wording there matters more.

Do ratings and reviews affect ASO?

Yes. Ratings shape whether people tap download, and both stores consider how users respond to an app. Ask for ratings at a happy moment inside the app using the official in-app review prompts, and reply to negative reviews politely.

Can I do ASO myself without an agency?

Yes. Start by listing the words your users would type, put the most important ones in your title and subtitle, and redesign your first three screenshots so each one shows a clear benefit. An agency mostly helps with research depth and ongoing testing.
