NYC SEO companies: what they should deliver, what they charge and how to vet them
A practical buyer's guide to hiring an SEO agency in New York, with pricing models, a vetting checklist and eight agencies whose New York offices we checked.
- Ask which of the five SEO areas (technical, content, authority, local, AI search) an agency would prioritize for you, and why.
- Insist on an audit before a quote, and a plan tied to conversions rather than rankings.
- Ask exactly how links are earned; paid link packages put your domain at risk.
- Keep content, Search Console and analytics in your own name.
- Use paid search when you need results this quarter; SEO pays off over time.
Search for NYC SEO companies and the first page is usually agencies ranking for their own city keyword, which proves they can do SEO for themselves but tells you little about what they'd do for you. This guide is meant to help you buy SEO well: what a New York SEO company should deliver, how they charge, how to vet them, and a short list of agencies with New York offices we checked on their own websites.
Disclosure: Appryze compiled this guide. We're a performance marketing team in New Delhi. We don't sell SEO services and aren't on this list. Agencies are listed alphabetically, not ranked, and none paid to be included. We've left out ratings, prices, awards and client names. Details come from each agency's own website as of November 2026.
What an SEO agency in New York should actually deliver
SEO work falls into five areas. Most agencies are stronger in some than others, so ask which ones they'd prioritize for your site and why.
- Technical SEO: crawlability, indexation, site speed, structured data, internal linking and clean migrations. Essential for large or ecommerce sites.
- Content: pages that answer what your buyers search for, organized by topic and intent rather than a keyword list.
- Authority and digital PR: earning links and mentions from credible sites. This is where low-quality link buying causes the most damage.
- Local SEO: Google Business Profile, location pages, reviews and local citations. Critical for clinics, law firms, restaurants and home services competing borough by borough.
- AI search visibility: being cited in AI-generated answers. Many agencies now sell this as GEO or AEO; ask what they actually change on the site and how they measure it.

Note the mix: only one of these leads with SEO and digital PR as its core offering. The rest are broader agencies where SEO is one department. Neither is better by default, but a specialist usually goes deeper, while a full-service firm makes it easier to coordinate SEO with paid search and site development.
How New York SEO agencies charge
| Model | Best for | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Ongoing content, technical and authority work | What's delivered each month: pages, fixes, links, reports? |
| Audit or project fee | Technical audits, migrations, one-off strategies | Does the fee include implementation support or just a document? |
| Content-volume pricing | Sites that need many pages produced | Who writes, who edits, and who checks facts? |
| Hourly consulting | In-house teams that need senior advice | Which senior person, and how many hours are realistic? |
Prices vary widely by scope and agency size, and New York firms generally sit at the higher end. Compare proposals on deliverables and seniority, not just the monthly number.
A vetting checklist for any SEO agency in New York
- They audited before they quoted. A proposal written without looking at your site and Search Console is a template.
- They talk about revenue, not just rankings. Organic conversions, leads and sales by page type should be in the plan.
- They explain how they earn links. Digital PR, original data and partnerships are fine. Paid link packages are a risk to your domain.
- They'll work with your developers. Technical recommendations only matter if someone implements them. Ask how they write tickets.
- They set a realistic timeline. SEO usually takes months to show meaningful results; anyone promising page one in weeks is guessing or cutting corners.
- You keep everything. Content, Search Console, analytics and any tools are in your name.
- Reporting is honest. They show what didn't work as well as what did.

- Ranking promises for specific keywords or positions.
- "Secret" link networks or a fixed number of links per month at a low price.
- Reports that show only keyword positions, not traffic or conversions.
- Large volumes of thin AI-written pages with no editing or expertise.
- Contracts that make you lose content or access if you leave.
Local SEO in New York: what's different
For local businesses, New York search is hyper-local. Someone searching for a dentist or an accountant in Brooklyn sees different results from someone in Midtown. That means location pages that genuinely describe each office, a complete and accurate Google Business Profile for every physical location, a steady flow of real reviews, and consistent name, address and phone details across directories. If you serve the whole city from one location, don't create extra addresses to look local. Google's Business Profile eligibility guidelines say a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours to qualify, and P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes are not eligible.
Service-area businesses, such as plumbers or movers, can show a service area instead of an address. Multi-location brands should have one profile per real location, each with its own page on the website. A good local SEO agency in New York will audit all of this before writing a single blog post.
What to prepare before you talk to SEO agencies
- Access to Google Search Console and analytics, so agencies can audit real data instead of guessing.
- Your top three goals for organic search: more leads, more online sales, or lower dependence on paid ads.
- A list of competitors you lose to in search, and the queries where it hurts most.
- Who can implement changes on the site, and how quickly.
- Any past SEO work, especially link building, so risks can be checked early.
When paid search is the faster answer
SEO compounds over time, but it is slow. If you need leads this quarter, are launching a new product, or want to test which keywords actually convert before investing in content, paid search gets you data in weeks. Many businesses run both: Google Ads to capture demand now and learn which terms convert, SEO to lower acquisition costs over time. Our guide to choosing a Google Ads agency covers that side. For app businesses, the store equivalent of SEO is app store optimization. For a wider view of the city's agencies, see digital marketing agencies in New York.
Where Appryze fits
We don't offer SEO. Appryze runs paid search and paid social (Google Ads, Meta, Amazon and app campaigns) from New Delhi for clients in the USA, UK, UAE and India, and works happily alongside an SEO agency. If paid search is the gap, see our performance marketing services.
Frequently asked questions
How much do NYC SEO companies charge?
Most New York SEO agencies work on monthly retainers for ongoing work, with project fees for audits and migrations and sometimes hourly rates for consulting. Prices vary widely with scope, site size and agency seniority, and New York firms tend to sit at the higher end. Compare proposals on what is delivered each month and who does the work.
How long does SEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show effects within weeks, but meaningful growth in organic traffic and leads usually takes several months, depending on your site's starting point, competition and how quickly recommendations are implemented. Be cautious of any agency promising first-page rankings within a few weeks.
How do I choose an SEO agency in New York?
Shortlist agencies that have audited your site before quoting, explain how they will tie SEO to conversions and revenue, describe exactly how they earn links, work well with developers, and leave all content and accounts in your name. Ask which SEO areas they would prioritize for your site and why.
Do I need a local NYC SEO company?
Not necessarily. Local knowledge helps with local SEO for businesses competing neighborhood by neighborhood, but most SEO work happens in your site, content and analytics. Some agencies that rank for New York SEO work remotely. What matters more is their process, references and how they report.
Should I invest in SEO or Google Ads first?
If you need leads quickly or want to test which keywords convert, start with Google Ads, which can produce data within weeks. SEO takes longer but lowers acquisition costs over time. Many businesses run both, using paid search data to decide which topics are worth investing in for organic search.
