What Is Supabase, and Is It a Good Firebase Alternative?
Supabase is like a furnished flat with a standard lease. You move in quickly, but the furniture is common and well known, so taking it with you to a new place later is much easier.
What Supabase is
Supabase is a backend-as-a-service: a company runs the servers, and your app uses ready-made features. It is often described as an open-source alternative to Firebase.
The big difference is the heart of it. Every Supabase project is a full PostgreSQL database, one of the most trusted databases in the world. Supabase adds useful tools around it.
What comes in the box
- Database: real PostgreSQL, with a friendly table editor in the dashboard.
- Auto-generated APIs: as soon as you create a table, your app can read and write it through a ready-made API.
- Auth: sign-in with email, magic links, phone and social logins such as Google and Apple.
- Storage: for images, videos and documents.
- Realtime: the app can listen for changes and update instantly, useful for chat or live status.
- Edge Functions: small pieces of your own server code, written in TypeScript.
- Vector search through a Postgres add-on, used for AI features like smart search.
How it works, simply
Your app connects to your Supabase project with official client kits for JavaScript, Flutter, Swift, Kotlin and more. Security is handled by row level security, a Postgres feature. It means rules live inside the database, such as "a user can only see rows where the owner is them." Even if someone tries a clever request, the database itself says no.
Like Firebase rules, these policies must be written and tested properly. A table without them can be exposed.
What Supabase is good for
- Apps with structured data: bookings, orders, inventory, users and payments that relate to each other.
- Reporting: SQL makes questions like "revenue by city by week" straightforward.
- Teams who want to avoid lock-in. Your data sits in standard Postgres, and Supabase can also be self-hosted.
- Web apps and dashboards next to a mobile app, sharing one database.
When Supabase may not suit you
- You need many mobile extras in one place, like push notifications, crash reports and A/B tests. Firebase bundles these; with Supabase you add other tools.
- Your team has no SQL experience. Supabase is easy to start, but good database design still matters.
- Strict enterprise or compliance needs may require checking which plan, region and agreements fit. Higher compliance features sit on higher plans.
- Huge, complex workloads may eventually be better on a cloud database you manage yourself, such as on AWS. Because it is Postgres, that move is relatively smooth.
Supabase vs Firebase at a glance
| Supabase | Firebase | |
|---|---|---|
| Database type | Tables with relations (SQL) | Documents (NoSQL), plus a newer PostgreSQL option |
| Open source | Yes | No |
| Self-hosting | Possible | No |
| Push notifications built in | No | Yes |
| Pricing style | Plan fee plus usage | Free plan, then pay-as-you-go |
Cost and timeline
Supabase has a free plan for small projects and testing, and paid plans with a monthly fee plus usage-based charges as you grow. Free projects can be paused after a period of inactivity, so production apps should be on a paid plan. Check the official pricing page for current numbers, since plans change.
On timeline, Supabase saves time like any BaaS: logins, APIs and storage are ready from day one. Its extra benefit is long-term. Your data is in standard Postgres, so a later move to your own servers is a planned project rather than a full rebuild.
How Appryze uses Supabase
We suggest Supabase when an app's data is structured and reporting matters, setting it up under your own account so you keep full ownership. Your fixed-price quote spells out which backend we plan to use and why. See our app development service, or the official Supabase docs.
Common questions
Is Supabase free?
Supabase has a free plan with limits, good for learning, prototypes and small projects. Production apps usually move to a paid plan, which has a monthly fee plus charges for extra usage. Free projects can be paused when inactive, so they are not ideal for a live app.
Is Supabase better than Firebase?
It depends on your app. Supabase is stronger for structured data, SQL reporting and avoiding lock-in. Firebase is stronger for an all-in-one mobile toolkit with push notifications, crash reports and real-time sync. Many apps even use Supabase for data and Firebase for notifications.
Can I use Supabase with Flutter?
Yes. Supabase has an official Flutter client, as well as kits for JavaScript, Swift, Kotlin and Python. A Flutter app can use Supabase for sign-in, the database, file storage and real-time updates.
Who owns my data on Supabase?
You do. Your data is stored in a standard PostgreSQL database in your project, and you can export it with normal Postgres tools. Supabase is also open source and can be self-hosted, which makes moving away much easier than with closed platforms.
