What Is Google Cloud, and How Does It Help an App?
Google Cloud is like renting space in Google's own workshop. You get the same heavy machines Google uses, and you pay by the hour for the ones you switch on.
What Google Cloud is
Google Cloud (sometimes called Google Cloud Platform or GCP) offers cloud services to businesses. It runs on Google's global network of data centers, grouped into regions. These include regions across the US, Europe and the Middle East, and two in India, Mumbai and Delhi.
If your app uses Firebase, you are already using Google Cloud. Every Firebase project is also a Google Cloud project, so you can add more powerful tools later without starting over.
Services an app team commonly uses
- Cloud Run: runs your backend in containers and scales up or down automatically, even to zero when no one is using it.
- Compute Engine: classic virtual servers you fully control.
- Cloud SQL: managed databases, including PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Cloud Storage: for files, images and backups.
- BigQuery: a data warehouse for analyzing very large amounts of data with SQL. Firebase and Google Analytics data can be exported into it.
- Vertex AI: tools for using Google's Gemini models and other AI models in your app.
- Pub/Sub and Cloud Scheduler: for background jobs and messages between services.
How it works, simply
You create a project, link a billing account, and switch on the services you want. Your backend code, written in something like Python or Node.js, is packaged and deployed, often to Cloud Run. Your mobile app calls it through an API.
Permissions are managed with IAM (identity and access management). That simply means you decide exactly who, and which program, can touch each resource.
What Google Cloud is good for
- Growing beyond Firebase while keeping everything in one place.
- Data and analytics, where BigQuery is a standout tool.
- AI features built on Google's models.
- Simple, scalable hosting with Cloud Run, which suits small teams.
- Marketing data, since Google Ads and Analytics data connects easily to BigQuery.
When it may not be the right fit
- Your team already knows AWS or Azure well. Skills matter more than small feature differences.
- You need a niche service only another provider offers.
- Tiny projects that a simple hosting service could cover more cheaply and with less setup.
As with any cloud, bills follow usage. Set budgets and alerts in the billing console before launch.
Google Cloud vs AWS
| Google Cloud | AWS | |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Amazon | |
| Works hand-in-hand with Firebase | Yes, same projects | No |
| Standout tools | BigQuery, Cloud Run, Vertex AI | Very wide service range |
| India regions | Mumbai, Delhi | Mumbai, Hyderabad |
| Pricing model | Pay as you go | Pay as you go |
Both are reliable choices. See our AWS page for the other side.
Cost and timeline
New Google Cloud customers get $300 in free trial credits, according to Google's free program page, and many products also have monthly free usage limits. After that, you pay for what you use.
Keep an eye on a few common cost drivers: servers left running when no one needs them, large BigQuery queries run over and over, and data sent out to users across regions. Cloud Run's ability to scale to zero helps keep small apps cheap during quiet hours.
For apps that start on Firebase, the path to Google Cloud is short. There is no migration, just new services switched on in the same project. That can save real time when the app grows and needs a custom backend or a data warehouse.
How Appryze uses Google Cloud
Our Firebase-based builds already live on Google Cloud, and we add Cloud Run, Cloud SQL or BigQuery when an app needs more, all under your own billing account. Since our founder runs growth and Google App Campaigns, we often wire up BigQuery for marketing reporting. See our app development page, or Google Cloud's free program.
Common questions
Is Google Cloud the same as Google Drive?
No. Google Drive is a file storage app for people. Google Cloud is a platform for businesses and developers to run servers, databases, data tools and AI services. Both are Google products, but they serve very different purposes.
What is the difference between Firebase and Google Cloud?
Firebase is a set of ready-made app services, like logins, Firestore and push notifications, that runs on top of Google Cloud. Google Cloud is the larger platform underneath, with servers, databases, BigQuery and AI tools. Every Firebase project is also a Google Cloud project.
Is Google Cloud free to try?
Yes. New customers get $300 in free trial credits, according to Google's free program page, and many products include monthly free usage limits. After the trial, you pay for what you use, so set budgets and alerts before going live.
Does Google Cloud have data centers in India?
Yes. Google Cloud has two regions in India, Mumbai and Delhi. Choosing a region near your users can make your app faster and may help with local data requirements. For US users, a US region is usually better.
