What a good app marketing agency in India does differently
Installs in India are cheap, which is exactly the trap. Here's how good agencies handle user quality, vernacular creative, tier-2/3 growth and install fraud.
- Optimize for deep-funnel events, not installs, as soon as volume allows.
- Write creatives natively in each language and localize the store listing to match.
- Treat app size and slow-network performance as marketing metrics for tier-2/3 users.
- Pay networks on post-install events and review fraud by sub-source weekly.
Hiring an app marketing agency in India makes sense for two kinds of clients: Indian apps that need to scale in one of the world's largest smartphone markets, and global apps entering India that discover their usual playbook doesn't transfer. Installs are cheap compared with the US or UK, which is exactly the trap. Cheap installs from the wrong users, the wrong language or fraudulent sources can cost more per paying customer than a US campaign.
This guide covers what makes Indian user acquisition different, and what a good agency should do about each part of it.
Why India UA needs its own playbook
A few structural differences shape every campaign in India:
- Android-first: most users are on Android, many on budget devices with limited storage and RAM. App size, startup speed and offline behavior affect conversion directly.
- Many languages: Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and others, plus the Hindi-English mix many urban users speak daily.
- Wide quality spread: the gap between a high-value metro user and a low-intent installer is far bigger than in mature markets.
- Price sensitivity and payment habits: UPI is the default way to pay, and users expect a low-friction first purchase.
- Higher fraud exposure: large volumes of low-cost inventory attract install fraud and incentivized traffic.
An agency that runs India like a cheaper version of the US will report great CPIs and disappointing revenue.
Low CPIs vs user quality: optimize deeper in the funnel
The fix for cheap-but-useless installs is to stop buying installs. Move bidding to the event that actually signals value, as soon as you have enough volume. A funnel view of what to optimize for:
| App type | Shallow event (avoid as a goal) | Better optimization event | What to report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lending or fintech | Install, registration | KYC complete, loan approved, first disbursal | Cost per disbursal, approval rate by source |
| Ecommerce or quick commerce | Install, product view | First order, second order | Cost per first order, 30-day repeat rate |
| Real-money or casual games | Install, tutorial complete | First deposit or purchase, day-7 retention | ROAS by cohort |
| Subscription or edtech | Install, signup | Trial start, paid subscription | Cost per paying user |
Report quality alongside cost. A weekly cohort view by channel, campaign and city tier, showing day-1, day-7 and day-30 retention plus the conversion rate to your key event, will tell you within weeks which sources are cheap because they're efficient and which are cheap because the users are worthless. Cut the second group even if their CPI looks attractive, and let the algorithms learn from the users you actually want.
Also check that your optimization event is protected. If a registration takes one tap, bots and low-intent users will complete it. Choose events that require real effort or verification, such as a verified phone number, a completed profile or a first transaction.
For lending apps specifically, see our guide to loan app user acquisition, which covers cost-per-disbursal bidding and approval-rate-aware optimization.
Vernacular creatives that actually work
Language is the biggest creative lever in India, and translation alone rarely pulls it. What works better:
- Write natively, don't translate. Scripts written by native speakers in each language, with local idioms and references, outperform English ads run through a translator.
- Match language to targeting. Run Hindi creatives across the Hindi belt, Tamil in Tamil Nadu, and so on, with separate ad groups so you can read results by language.
- Test Hinglish for metros. Many urban users respond better to the mix they actually speak than to formal Hindi or English.
- Use real people and familiar settings. UGC-style video with relatable faces, homes and shops tends to beat polished studio work.
- Localize the store listing too. If the ad is in Telugu and the Play Store page is in English, conversion drops at the last step. Google Play supports localized listings and custom store listings.
- Localize the app's first screens. Language selection at onboarding keeps the promise the ad made.
Reaching tier-2 and tier-3 cities
Growth in many Indian categories now comes from beyond the metros. Reaching those users profitably takes product and media changes together:
- Keep the app light. Large downloads lose users on low-storage phones and limited data plans. Track install size as a marketing metric.
- Design for slow networks: compressed images, offline states and fast first load.
- Simplify onboarding: phone number and OTP login, minimal typing, voice or visual cues where helpful.
- Plan around the calendar: Diwali, regional festivals such as Durga Puja, Pongal and Onam, wedding seasons and major cricket tournaments all shift costs and intent. Budget and creative should follow them.
- Separate geo campaigns so tier-1 costs don't hide tier-2 performance, or the reverse.

Install fraud is a real line item in Indian UA, especially on networks and affiliates outside the big self-serve platforms. Common types and defenses:
| Fraud type | How it shows up | Defense |
|---|---|---|
| Click flooding | Huge click volumes, low click-to-install rate, long click-to-install times | MMP fraud filters, click-to-install time analysis |
| Install hijacking | Very short click-to-install times claiming organic installs | MMP fraud protection, Play Install Referrer validation |
| Device farms and bots | Installs with no meaningful in-app activity, odd device clusters | Post-install event checks, device and IP anomaly rules |
| Incentivized traffic passed off as real | Strong day-0, very weak day-7 retention | Retention-based payouts, source-level cohort reports |
Insist on payouts tied to post-install events for any network buy, and review cohorts by sub-source weekly. Our MMP comparison covers the fraud tools each attribution platform offers.
Channel mix beyond Google and Meta
Google App Campaigns and Meta remain the core for most apps, but India has channels that matter more here than elsewhere:
- OEM app stores and placements on Xiaomi, Samsung, OPPO, vivo and other device makers, which can deliver scale at low cost but need close quality monitoring.
- Regional social and short-video platforms, where vernacular content is the norm.
- Influencer and creator partnerships, especially regional creators with trusted audiences in specific categories like finance or education.
- Affiliate and performance networks, only with event-based payouts and fraud controls.
- Referral programs, which work well in markets where word of mouth and UPI-style rewards are familiar.
Compliance basics for Indian app marketing
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act and its rules, notified in November 2025, phase in obligations around consent, notices and data handling over roughly 18 months. Marketing teams should check that SDKs, consent flows and audience uploads fit the new requirements as they come into force. Financial apps face additional rules, including RBI digital lending requirements and Google Play's policies for personal loan apps in India; our fintech app marketing guide covers policy-safe advertising. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
What to ask an app marketing agency in India
- What event will you optimize for, and when will you move off installs?
- How do you produce vernacular creatives, and who writes them?
- Which networks beyond Google and Meta do you use, and how are they paid?
- What fraud checks run on every source, and how often do you review sub-sources?
- Will the ad accounts and MMP be in my company's name?
- What does a weekly report include?
Good answers are specific to your category and name real numbers from your own funnel, not generic benchmarks. Be wary of any agency that promises a fixed CPI before seeing your app, or that wants to run campaigns from its own ad accounts. If you can't see the raw data, you can't judge the work, and you lose the account history if you ever switch.

Frequently asked questions
Why are app installs so cheap in India?
India has a very large Android user base and relatively low advertising costs per impression compared with the US or UK, so cost per install is usually much lower. But many cheap installs come from low-intent users or fraudulent sources. What matters is the cost per paying or active user, which is why good agencies optimize for in-app events.
Do vernacular ads work better in India?
Often, yes, especially outside the metros. Ads written natively in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and other languages tend to connect better than English or translated ads. Results vary by category and audience, so run separate ad groups by language, test Hinglish for urban users and localize the store listing to match.
How do you prevent app install fraud in India?
Use a mobile measurement partner with fraud protection, analyze click-to-install times, validate installs with the Play Install Referrer, and check post-install activity by source. For networks and affiliates, pay on post-install events such as registrations or purchases rather than installs, and review cohort retention by sub-source every week.
How much does an app marketing agency in India charge?
Agencies usually charge a monthly management fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a mix of both, with ad spend paid directly to Google, Meta and other platforms. Fees vary with spend, channels and creative needs. Ask for pricing that is separate from media spend and for ad accounts in your own company's name.
Can a global app use an Indian agency to launch in India?
Yes. A local team understands languages, regional calendars, payment habits, OEM channels and fraud patterns that global teams often miss. Make sure the agency works in your own ad and MMP accounts, reports in your currency and time zone, and optimizes for the same business outcomes you use elsewhere.
