How much does it cost to make an app? A plain-English breakdown
Typical app budgets run from under $10,000 to well over $500,000. Here's how app type, team location and engagement model decide where yours lands.
- Every quote is hours times rate, plus fixed launch costs and running costs.
- App type sets the rough size: a simple content app and an on-demand marketplace differ by an order of magnitude.
- Team location and engagement model can change the price of the same scope several times over.
- Budget for maintenance, third-party services, store fees and marketing, not just the build.
- All ranges here are typical market ranges, not quotes.
How much does it cost to make an app? For a professionally built mobile app, typical budgets run from under $10,000 for a simple app built offshore to well over $500,000 for a complex platform built by a US agency. That range is wide because two things drive it: how much there is to build, and who builds it. This guide breaks both down so you can place your own app in the range before you ask for a single quote.
All figures below are typical market ranges based on commonly quoted rates, not sourced statistics or quotes. Real projects land outside them. Platform fees are linked to Apple's and Google's own pages, checked in November 2026.
The formula behind every app quote
Strip away the sales language and every app development cost estimate is built the same way:
Total cost = (hours to build × hourly rate) + fixed launch costs + running costs
- Hours come from the scope: screens, user roles, features, integrations, the backend and admin panel, design, QA and release work.
- Rate comes from where the team sits and what the rate covers (one freelancer's time, or a full team with design, QA and project management).
- Fixed and running costs are the developer accounts, hosting, third-party services, maintenance and marketing that most first budgets leave out.
Change any one of the three and the number moves a lot. That's why two honest quotes for "the same app" can differ by five times.
Typical cost to build an app, by app type
Most apps fall into a recognizable type. The table gives typical ranges for a first production version on iOS and Android with a backend and admin panel. Offshore assumes a mid-sized agency in a lower-cost region such as India; US assumes a mid-sized US agency.
| App type | What it usually includes | Typical effort | Offshore agency (typical) | US agency (typical) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple utility or content app | One user role, login, content or catalog, push notifications, basic admin | 300 to 700 hours | $8,000 to $30,000 | $40,000 to $120,000 |
| Booking or scheduling app | Calendars, availability, payments, reminders, provider and customer views | 700 to 1,400 hours | $20,000 to $60,000 | $90,000 to $250,000 |
| Ecommerce app | Catalog, search, cart, checkout, order tracking, store integration | 800 to 1,600 hours | $22,000 to $70,000 | $100,000 to $280,000 |
| Social or community app | Profiles, feeds, real-time chat, media uploads, moderation tools | 1,200 to 2,500 hours | $35,000 to $110,000 | $150,000 to $450,000 |
| On-demand marketplace | Customer, provider and admin apps, live tracking, payouts | 2,000 to 4,000+ hours | $50,000 to $180,000+ | $250,000 to $700,000+ |
| Fintech or lending app | KYC, bank or bureau integrations, security reviews, compliance work | 2,000 to 4,500+ hours | $60,000 to $200,000+ | $250,000 to $750,000+ |
A tightly scoped MVP can sit well below its type's range, because you build one core flow instead of the whole product. Our MVP planning guide shows how to cut scope without cutting what you need to learn.
What moves the price within a range
Two apps of the same type can still differ by a factor of two or three. The usual reasons:
- Number of user roles. Every role (customer, provider, admin) is close to a separate app experience.
- Integrations. Payments, maps, calendars, CRMs, banking or health data APIs. Each one adds build and testing time, and some add compliance work.
- Real-time features. Chat, live location and live updates need more backend engineering and testing than request-and-response screens.
- Offline support. Letting users work without a connection, then syncing safely, is one of the most underestimated features.
- Design ambition. Standard platform components are fast; a custom design system with heavy animation takes much longer.
- Regulation. Health, finance and children's apps carry privacy, security and audit requirements that add weeks.

Who builds it: team location and engagement model
The same scope costs very different amounts depending on who you hire and how you pay them.
| Option | How you usually pay | What's typically included | Hidden cost to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Hourly or per task | One person's development time | Your time managing design, QA, backend and releases |
| Offshore agency | Fixed price per scope, or monthly team fee | Design, development, QA, project management, release | Time-zone coordination; vague scopes leading to change requests |
| US or UK agency | Fixed price, or time and materials | Full team, local workshops, same-hours communication | The highest hourly rates for the same work |
| In-house team | Salaries and benefits | Full control and long-term knowledge | Recruiting time, benefits, payroll taxes and management overhead |
| No-code or template | Monthly subscription | Fast launch for simple apps | Limits on custom features and on moving the app later |

Platform choice is one of the biggest single levers on cost:
- One platform first (iPhone or Android only) is the cheapest way to launch, if your audience clearly leans one way.
- Two native apps (Swift and Kotlin) mean two codebases. The backend and design are shared, but app development and maintenance roughly double.
- Cross-platform (Flutter or React Native) builds both apps from one codebase. For most standard apps that saves a meaningful share of the app-side effort, though the savings shrink when the app relies on heavy native features.
If your audience is iPhone-heavy, see our iOS app development cost guide for the Apple-specific costs.
The costs after the build that budgets forget
Your build quote is not your total cost of ownership. Plan for these too:
- Developer accounts. The Apple Developer Program is a $99 annual membership, and Google Play charges a one-time US$25 registration fee. Small, but register both under your company.
- Hosting and backend services. Often modest at launch, then growing with users, storage and traffic.
- Third-party services. Maps, SMS and email, push, analytics, attribution, payments and AI APIs, many priced by usage.
- Store commissions on in-app purchases and subscriptions, which vary by program and region. Check Apple's and Google's current terms for your case.
- Maintenance. A common rule of thumb is to budget roughly 15 to 25 percent of the original build cost each year for bug fixes, OS updates, security patches and small improvements. Apple and Google both raise their SDK requirements every year, so this isn't optional.
- Marketing. An app with no acquisition budget usually launches to silence. Plan a separate test budget for the first months of campaigns.
How to reduce the cost to build an app without hurting it
- Launch one core flow. Cut every feature that doesn't help you learn whether users want the main thing.
- Use off-the-shelf services for login, payments, chat and video instead of building them.
- Choose cross-platform when your app doesn't depend on heavy native features.
- Use standard UI components for version one, and save custom animation for later.
- Write the scope down before asking for quotes, so you pay for building, not for guessing.
- Don't cut QA, analytics or store compliance. These are the cheapest things to do during the build and the most expensive to fix after launch.
How to get an accurate app development quote
Vendors can only price what you describe. Send every vendor the same short brief:
- The problem the app solves and who uses it, with each user role listed.
- The key screens or flows, even as rough sketches.
- Required integrations (payments, maps, existing systems).
- Platforms: iOS, Android, web, or a mix.
- What exists already: designs, a backend, an old app.
- Your target launch window and budget range.
Then compare quotes on the same scope: what's included (design, QA, backend, admin, store submission), how changes are priced and who owns the code. For year-by-year pricing trends and more detail on each line item, see our app development cost guide for 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to make a simple app?
A simple app with one user role, login, content and push notifications typically costs about $8,000 to $30,000 with an offshore agency, and roughly $40,000 to $120,000 with a US agency. These are typical ranges, not quotes. A backend and admin panel are usually included in those figures, and design ambition can move the price a lot.
Why do app development quotes vary so much?
Quotes differ because vendors assume different scopes, use different rates and include different things. One quote may cover design, QA, backend and store submission while another covers only coding. Send every vendor the same written brief and compare what is included, how changes are priced and who owns the code.
How much does it cost to maintain an app each year?
A common rule of thumb is roughly 15 to 25 percent of the original build cost per year, covering bug fixes, operating system updates, security patches and small improvements. Hosting, third-party services and the Apple Developer membership come on top. Treat it as a planning range, since it varies with how actively you develop the app.
Is it cheaper to build an app for iOS or Android?
Build cost for a single platform is usually similar. The bigger saving comes from launching on one platform first, or using Flutter or React Native to build both from one codebase. Apple charges a $99 annual developer membership, while Google Play charges a one-time US$25 registration fee.
Can I build an app for $5,000?
Sometimes, with a no-code tool, a template or a freelancer building a very small app. A custom app with a backend, admin panel, QA and store submission usually costs more. If your budget is tight, cut the scope to one core flow rather than cutting testing, analytics or store compliance.
What costs come after an app is built?
Expect developer account fees, hosting, usage-based services such as maps, SMS and analytics, store commissions on in-app purchases, yearly maintenance and marketing. Marketing is the one most often missing from first budgets, and an app without an acquisition plan usually gets very few users.
