How Duolingo, Spotify, Canva, Strava and Match Group make money

Five well-known apps, five monetization models, and only sourced, dated figures: what each app does, how it earns, the growth strategy behind it, and the lesson for founders.

Key takeaways
  • All five apps are free to start and charge only after users have seen the core value.
  • Subscriptions carry the revenue; ads at Duolingo and Spotify are a small share of the total.
  • Retention mechanics such as streaks, social feeds and saved history are what make the paid tier worth renewing.
  • Raising revenue per payer can offset a shrinking paying base for a while, but it doesn't replace growth.
  • Use only filings and on-record company statements for app revenue figures, with the date attached.

Many app business case studies online repeat the same unsourced revenue numbers until they look like facts. This one uses only what companies have reported to investors or said on the record to reputable press, with the period next to every figure and a link to where it came from.

Five apps, five different ways of making money: Duolingo, Spotify, Canva, Strava and Match Group. For each one you'll get what it does, how it makes money, one growth strategy that matters, and a lesson you can apply to your own product.

How these app business case studies were sourced

Every figure below comes from the latest report we could check ourselves as of November 2026:

Where a number wasn't publicly confirmed, such as Strava's revenue, we left it out rather than quoting a third-party estimate.

Duolingo: the habit is the product

What it does. A free, game-like learning app, best known for languages, with short daily lessons.

How it makes money. Mostly subscriptions. In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Duolingo reported revenue of $298.5 million, 12.7 million paid subscribers, 140.6 million monthly active users and 58.7 million daily active users, according to its Q2 2026 shareholder letter filed with the SEC. Subscription revenue was $258.0 million of that total, about 86% by our calculation, with advertising at $21.1 million and the Duolingo English Test and in-app purchases making up the rest. Paid subscribers were roughly 9% of monthly users (our calculation).

Growth strategy. Retention mechanics, above all the streak. In June 2026 the company ran a one-off "Streak Revival" event that let learners restore their longest streak by completing three lessons; it says about 15.4 million learners did, nearly 8 million of whom had no active streak. The same letter credits constant product testing and organic social media, with creator content driving much of its reach in some Asian markets.

Lesson for founders. The paid tier sells to an existing habit. If people don't come back without being paid or pushed, no paywall design will fix it, so build the reason to return before you tune the price.

Spotify: a free tier that feeds the paid one

What it does. Music, podcast and audiobook streaming, with a free ad-supported tier and paid Premium plans.

How it makes money. Premium subscriptions carry the business. For the third quarter of 2026, reported on October 22, 2026, Spotify had 788 million monthly active users, 499 million of them on the ad-supported tier, and 306 million Premium subscribers, according to Music Business Worldwide's coverage of the results. Total revenue was €4.969 billion, of which Premium was €4.487 billion and advertising €482 million. By our calculation, ads were under 10% of revenue even though ad-supported listeners outnumber subscribers.

Growth strategy. The free tier works as the top of the funnel, and promotional offers convert free listeners into subscribers. The same report credits price increases with lifting average revenue per Premium user and names promotional campaign intake and partnerships as drivers of subscriber growth.

Lesson for founders. Ads can pay part of the cost of a free tier, but they rarely become the business. If you run a free tier with ads, judge it mainly by how many users it moves to paid, not by ad revenue alone.

Canva: individuals pull in teams

What it does. A browser and mobile design tool with templates for social posts, presentations, documents and more, now with a large AI layer.

How it makes money. Freemium subscriptions for individuals and teams, plus enterprise contracts. Canva is private. Co-founder and COO Cliff Obrecht told TechCrunch in February 2026 that the company ended 2025 with $4 billion in annual recurring revenue, more than 265 million monthly active users and more than 31 million paying users. Accounts with more than 25 seats had doubled to $500 million in annual recurring revenue. That puts paying users at roughly 12% of monthly users, by our calculation.

Growth strategy. Search and low friction. Obrecht said search remains Canva's largest source of traffic and that the company is investing in showing up in AI chatbot answers. It has also introduced lower-priced plans in several emerging markets to convert more free users.

Lesson for founders. A free product that individuals adopt at work is a sales channel into companies. If your app is used in a job, design team sharing, admin controls and seat pricing early, because that's where larger contracts come from.

Strava: the network is the moat

What it does. Activity tracking and a social feed for runners, cyclists and other athletes, connected to the watches and bike computers they already use.

How it makes money. A free app with a paid subscription for advanced features. In 2020, Strava moved full segment leaderboards and route planning behind its subscription, a widely covered change that turned popular free features into the reason to pay. Strava is private and hasn't published revenue, so we don't quote one. In a January 2026 press release, it said it has over 180 million users in more than 185 countries.

Growth strategy. Social features and integrations. Kudos, clubs, challenges and segment rankings give people a reason to post every workout, and syncing with fitness devices means users don't have to change how they record activity.

Lesson for founders. Social features make an app harder to leave, because your friends and history live there. Moving features behind a paywall is possible, but it works only when users already depend on them.

Match Group: revenue per payer vs. number of payers

What it does. A portfolio of dating apps, including Tinder and Hinge.

How it makes money. Paid subscription tiers and one-off feature purchases inside the apps. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Match Group reported revenue of $853 million, down 1% year over year, with 13.25 million payers, down 6%, and revenue per payer of $21.13, up 6%, according to its Q2 2026 results filed with the SEC. Hinge revenue grew 22% year over year. The company doesn't break out Tinder's revenue in that release.

Growth strategy. Two different plays. Tinder is in what the company calls a product-led turnaround: new recommendation algorithms, more trust and safety work, a rebrand, Double Date, Music Mode and in-person events. Hinge is expanding into new European and Latin American countries.

Lesson for founders. Raising what each payer spends can hold revenue steady while the paying base shrinks, but only for a while. Long-term growth comes from users getting the outcome they came for, which is a product problem, not a pricing one.

Write your own one-page case study first

Before building, write the same four-part case study for your idea, as if it already existed:

  1. What it does: one sentence a user would recognize.
  2. How it makes money: who pays, for what, and roughly what share of users you expect to pay.
  3. Growth strategy: the one channel or loop that brings users back and brings new ones in.
  4. Risk: the assumption that, if wrong, breaks the model.

If you can't fill in step 3, you have a feature, not a business yet. Our lists of profitable app ideas and app ideas can help you pressure-test alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

How do most successful apps make money?

Most large consumer apps combine a free tier with a paid subscription. Duolingo, Spotify, Canva, Strava and Match Group all let people start free, then charge for more features, no ads or ongoing access. Advertising and one-off in-app purchases usually play a supporting role. The common thread is that only a minority of users pay, so the free experience has to bring people back.

How does Duolingo make money?

Mainly through subscriptions. In its second quarter of 2026, Duolingo reported $298.5 million in revenue, of which $258.0 million came from subscriptions. The rest came from advertising shown to free users, the Duolingo English Test and in-app purchases. It reported 12.7 million paid subscribers against 140.6 million monthly active users in that quarter.

How much of Spotify's revenue comes from ads?

A small share. In the third quarter of 2026, Spotify reported €482 million in advertising revenue out of €4.969 billion in total revenue, which works out to just under 10%. Premium subscriptions made up the rest, even though more of Spotify's 788 million monthly users were on the free ad-supported tier than on Premium.

How many paying users does Canva have?

Canva's co-founder and COO told TechCrunch in February 2026 that the company had more than 31 million paying users and more than 265 million monthly active users at the end of 2025, with $4 billion in annual recurring revenue. Canva is private, so these are company-stated figures rather than audited results.

Are app revenue numbers on case study websites reliable?

Often not. Many sites repeat estimates from other blogs or paywalled databases without saying where they came from or when. For public companies, check the quarterly results and shareholder letters on their investor relations site or the SEC. For private apps, rely on what the company has said on the record, and treat third-party estimates as estimates.

What can a small app learn from big app case studies?

The tactics scale down better than the budgets. Give users value before asking for money, build one strong reason to return every day or week, decide early who pays and for what, and measure how many free users become paying ones. A small app can apply all of these from the first version without a large marketing budget.
