Cost per Install Benchmarks and How to Use Them

Cost per install benchmarks are useful for sanity-checking a media plan, as long as you remember what they leave out. CPI varies widely by country, platform, app category, channel and season, and published averages mix very different advertisers together. A benchmark can tell you whether your costs are in a plausible range; it cannot tell you whether those installs are profitable.

The guides in this category explain how to read benchmark data responsibly. They look at why costs differ between markets such as the US and India, why iOS and Android often price differently, and how category competition affects bids. Where we quote figures, we cite the report they come from, such as studies published by attribution and ad tech companies, and note the date and methodology so you can judge relevance.

We also argue that CPI should not be your main target. Cost per registered user, cost per paying user, return on ad spend and payback period tell you far more about whether growth is healthy, and the guides show how to track them from day one. Appryze plans campaigns around those deeper metrics. Our app marketing page explains how we set targets with clients.

Cost per Install Benchmarks: common questions

How is cost per install calculated?

Cost per install is total ad spend divided by the number of attributed installs in the same period. Results depend on the attribution source, since ad networks, MMPs and store consoles may count installs differently, and on whether organic installs are excluded. Use one consistent source when comparing over time.

Where can I find reliable CPI benchmark data?

Benchmark reports are published periodically by attribution providers, ad networks and app intelligence companies. Look for recent reports that state their sample size, date range, regions and categories. Treat them as directional ranges, and compare against your own historical data whenever possible.

Why does my cost per install change from month to month?

CPI moves with seasonal ad demand, competitor activity, creative fatigue, changes to bids or budgets, campaign learning phases, audience saturation and platform updates. Spikes around major shopping holidays are common. Track trends over several weeks rather than reacting to daily swings.
