Meta app install ads in 2026: setup, events, creatives and how to scale
Meta now automates most targeting, so your events and creatives do the real work. Here's how to set up app campaigns, measure them on iOS and scale without breaking them.
- Meta now uses one unified campaign setup; Advantage+ means automated budget, audience and placements.
- Optimize for the deepest in-app event you can hit often enough, not installs forever.
- Send backend-confirmed events through the Conversions API with deduplication IDs.
- On iOS, use SKAdNetwork or AEM and judge results on weekly trends.
- Creative is your targeting: test distinct concepts and refresh winners regularly.
Meta app install ads can be one of the fastest ways to put an app in front of the right people, and one of the fastest ways to waste a budget. The difference rarely comes down to targeting tricks anymore. Meta's delivery system now does most of the targeting itself. What you control is the signal you send it (which events, measured how), the creative you give it, and the discipline with which you scale.
This guide covers how Meta's app campaigns work after the Advantage+ changes, how to set up events with the SDK and Conversions API, iOS measurement, the creative formats that matter, and practical scaling rules.
How Meta app campaigns work now
Meta used to offer two separate paths for app advertisers: a manual app promotion campaign and a separate "Advantage+ app campaign" type. In 2025 Meta replaced that split with a single, unified campaign setup for sales and app campaigns. A campaign now counts as Advantage+ when three settings are on:
- Advantage+ campaign budget: Meta distributes spend across ad sets automatically.
- Advantage+ audience: Meta finds people likely to convert, using your audience inputs as suggestions rather than hard limits.
- Advantage+ placements: ads can run across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network wherever results are cheapest.
You can still turn some of these off and use manual controls, but for most app advertisers the automated setup is the starting point. The old dedicated Advantage+ app campaign type has been phased out of Meta's API, so if you're using older tools or scripts, check that they create campaigns in the current structure.
The practical consequence: with targeting largely automated, your events and your creatives are your targeting.
Choose the right optimization goal
Within an app promotion campaign, you choose what Meta optimizes for. This is the most important setting in the account.
| Optimize for | Use when | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| App installs | Brand-new app with no event data yet, or a very cheap first action | Meta finds people who install and leave; cheapest installs are rarely the best users |
| App events (e.g. registration, trial, purchase) | You can generate a steady volume of that event each week | Too-rare events keep the campaign stuck in learning |
| Value | You send purchase values and have enough purchase volume | Needs accurate revenue data and more volume than event optimization |
A common path is to start on installs or an early event like registration for the first weeks, then move to a deeper event (trial started, first purchase, first order) once you have the volume. Pick the deepest event you can hit often enough for the campaign to learn.
Event setup: SDK, MMP and Conversions API
Meta can only optimize toward what it can see. There are three common ways to send app events, and many apps use more than one:
- Meta SDK in the app. The most direct option, and the one needed for some features such as deep link handling. Configure standard events (install, registration, add to cart, purchase, subscribe) with consistent parameters.
- Through your mobile measurement partner. If you use AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch or similar, events can be forwarded to Meta from the MMP, which keeps attribution consistent across channels.
- Conversions API for app events. Meta's Conversions API for app events lets your server send events directly, which is valuable for actions confirmed on the backend, such as a payment clearing or a loan being approved. The dataset must be linked to your app, and each event needs an event ID so Meta can remove duplicates with the SDK or MMP.
Event setup checklist
- One clear, documented list of events and parameters, shared by product, engineering and marketing.
- Purchase or subscription events carry value and currency.
- Server-confirmed events go through the Conversions API with deduplication IDs.
- Test events verified in Events Manager before any money is spent.
- No sensitive personal data sent in event parameters.

On iOS, Apple's App Tracking Transparency means most users can't be tracked at the device level, so Meta relies on privacy-preserving measurement. Meta's developer documentation describes two approaches for iOS 14+ campaigns: Apple's SKAdNetwork and Meta's Aggregated Event Measurement (AEM). Key points:
- iOS app ad sets that target iOS 14 and later must use either SKAdNetwork or AEM attribution.
- SKAdNetwork campaigns have limits on the number of campaigns per app, and some settings can't be edited once the campaign is live.
- AEM limits each app to a prioritized set of conversion events, so decide which events matter most.
- Expect iOS results to be delayed and modeled. Judge iOS on trends over a week or more, not on daily numbers.
Getting conversion values right is a topic of its own; our SKAdNetwork iOS attribution guide walks through schema design.
Creative: the lever that matters most
With audiences automated, creative does the targeting. A video about saving money on groceries finds a different person than one about meal planning, even inside the same campaign. Build a creative system, not a one-off ad.
Formats to cover
- Vertical video (9:16) for Reels and Stories. This is where much app inventory sits. Hook in the first two seconds and show the app early.
- Square or 4:5 video and static for Feed placements.
- Carousel to show several features or outcomes in sequence.
- Playable ads for games and highly interactive apps, letting people try a mini version before installing.
Concepts worth testing
- Problem and solution: show the frustration, then the app fixing it.
- Screen-recorded demo with clear captions (most people watch without sound).
- Creator or user-style testimonial, filmed on a phone.
- Before and after, or a result in numbers that you can substantiate.
Test concepts, not tiny variations. Launch three to five genuinely different ideas, let them gather spend, keep the winners and replace the losers on a regular rhythm, typically every one to two weeks for active accounts.
Scaling Meta app install ads without losing performance
These are practical rules of thumb, not Meta policies, but they prevent most self-inflicted problems:
- Don't judge too early. Give a new campaign several days and enough optimization events before deciding. Daily swings during learning are normal.
- Avoid significant edits during learning. Changing the optimization event, bid strategy or creative set restarts learning.
- Raise budgets gradually. Many practitioners increase budgets in moderate steps every few days rather than doubling overnight, which can destabilize delivery.
- Scale through creative. When performance plateaus, new winning creatives usually unlock more volume than budget changes.
- Use cost controls carefully. A cost-per-result goal can protect efficiency but limits volume if set too tight.
- Consolidate. Fewer, larger ad sets give the system more data than many small ones.
- Watch downstream quality. If cost per install falls but retention or purchases fall too, you're buying the wrong users.
Reporting: which numbers to trust
Meta Ads Manager, your MMP and your own backend will never match exactly. Each uses different attribution windows, and iOS data is aggregated. Pick one source of truth for business decisions, usually your MMP or backend for cohort revenue and retention, and use Ads Manager for in-platform optimization decisions such as which creative to pause. Review both weekly, and look at cost per key event and day-7 retention by campaign, not just cost per install.
When the two sources disagree sharply, check the basics first: duplicate events, a broken SDK version in a recent release, or a change in attribution settings. Most big discrepancies are setup problems, not mysteries.
Common mistakes
- Optimizing for installs forever because it "looks cheap."
- Launching with untested events, then optimizing on broken data.
- Running the same three creatives for months.
- Comparing Meta's in-platform numbers to your MMP without understanding the different attribution windows.
- Splitting a small budget into many ad sets that never exit learning.

Frequently asked questions
How do Meta app install ads work?
You create an app promotion campaign, connect your app and events, choose what to optimize for (installs, an in-app event or value), and supply creatives. With Advantage+ settings on, Meta automatically distributes budget, finds audiences and picks placements across Facebook, Instagram and its other apps, using your event data to find people likely to act.
What are Advantage+ app campaigns?
Advantage+ originally referred to a separate automated app campaign type. Since 2025, Meta uses a single unified setup, and an app campaign counts as Advantage+ when Advantage+ campaign budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements are turned on. You can still switch some of these off for more manual control.
Should I optimize Meta app campaigns for installs or events?
Use installs only at the very start or when you have no event data. As soon as you can generate a steady weekly volume of a meaningful event, such as registration, trial start or purchase, switch to that event. Install optimization tends to find people who install and leave, which raises your real cost per customer.
Do I need the Meta SDK for app ads?
Not always, but you need a reliable way to send app events. Options include the Meta SDK, forwarding events from a mobile measurement partner such as AppsFlyer or Adjust, and the Conversions API for app events from your server. Many apps combine them and use event IDs so Meta can remove duplicates.
How do Meta app ads track iOS users?
For iOS 14 and later, Meta uses Apple's SKAdNetwork or its own Aggregated Event Measurement, because most users can't be tracked at the device level. Results are aggregated, delayed and partly modeled, and there are limits on campaigns and prioritized events, so judge iOS performance on trends across a week or more.
