How to choose a fintech app development company that won't fail your audit
Fintech apps carry regulatory, security and store-policy risk that ordinary apps don't. Here's what your development partner needs to get right, and how to check.
- Most fintechs build on regulated partners, and those partners will audit your app's security and flows.
- Map your compliance obligations (GLBA, PCI DSS, RBI rules) before scoping features.
- Integrations with KYC, bank data and payments providers are where timelines usually slip.
- Google Play and Apple apply extra policies to finance and loan apps; prepare declarations during the build.
- Pick a team that can name production fintech integrations and explain how it handles secrets and access.
Choosing a fintech app development company is different from hiring for a regular consumer app. A bug in a recipe app is an annoyance. A bug in a payments or lending app can move money to the wrong place, expose regulated data, or get your app pulled from the store. The team you pick needs to understand security, compliance and financial integrations as well as it understands Swift, Kotlin or Flutter.
This guide covers what's different about fintech builds in the US and India, the security baseline to insist on, the integrations most products need, and how to tell whether a team has real fintech experience.
What makes fintech app development different
Three things change the moment money or financial data is involved:
- You usually build on regulated partners. Most fintechs don't hold a bank charter or lending license themselves. They work with a sponsor bank, NBFC, payment processor or card issuer, and those partners will audit your security and your flows before going live.
- Data handling is regulated. Identity documents, bank account data, credit reports and transaction history all carry legal obligations on how you collect, store and share them.
- App stores apply extra rules. Finance apps go through additional declarations and policy checks, especially for lending.
A team that has shipped fintech before will raise these in the first call. A team that hasn't will talk about screens.
The compliance map: US and India
Which rules apply depends on your product, your partners and where your users are. This table is a starting map, not legal advice; confirm specifics with counsel and your regulated partner.
| Area | United States | India |
|---|---|---|
| Data security | GLBA and the FTC Safeguards Rule for many non-bank financial companies. | Digital Personal Data Protection Act, plus RBI requirements for regulated entities and their partners. |
| Card data | PCI DSS if you store, process or transmit card data. Most apps reduce scope with tokenized processors. | PCI DSS, plus RBI card-on-file tokenization rules. |
| Lending | State licensing, Truth in Lending disclosures, fair lending rules. | RBI Digital Lending Directions, 2025: disbursal to the borrower's account, Key Fact Statement, cooling-off period, reporting of digital lending apps to RBI. |
| Identity | KYC/AML obligations, usually carried out by or with your bank partner. | KYC norms, Aadhaar-based eKYC, video KYC and CKYC through regulated entities. |
| Bank data access | Data aggregators via consumer consent. The CFPB's open banking rule under Section 1033 has been blocked by a federal court and is under reconsideration as of 2026, so watch for changes. | Account Aggregator framework for consent-based data sharing. |
Two details worth knowing on the US side. The FTC's Safeguards Rule guidance lists payday lenders, mortgage brokers and finance companies among covered businesses and requires a written risk assessment, encryption of customer data, multi-factor authentication, and notifying the FTC within 30 days of discovering a breach involving at least 500 consumers' unencrypted information. And the PCI Security Standards Council made the remaining future-dated requirements of PCI DSS v4.0.1 mandatory from 31 March 2025.
Security baseline your team should build in
Use this as a checklist when reviewing a proposal or architecture document:
- Encryption in transit (TLS everywhere, certificate pinning for sensitive calls) and at rest for databases, backups and file storage.
- Secrets kept in a managed vault or the platform keychain, never in the app binary or the repo.
- Strong authentication: multi-factor for users where risk is high, biometric unlock tied to the device keystore, short-lived tokens and secure session handling.
- Role-based access for admin and operations tools, with every sensitive action logged.
- Minimal data collection: only the fields and device permissions the product actually needs.
- Device and app integrity checks (Play Integrity on Android, App Attest on iOS) for high-risk actions.
- Separate environments for development, staging and production, with production data never copied into test.
- Penetration testing before launch and on a schedule after it, plus dependency scanning in the build pipeline.
Integrations most fintech apps need
Integrations are where fintech timelines usually slip, because each partner has its own sandbox, documentation quality and approval process.
United States
- Identity verification and KYC: document scan, selfie match and watchlist screening through providers such as Persona, Alloy or Socure.
- Bank account linking: aggregators such as Plaid, MX or Finicity for account verification and balance data.
- Payments and payouts: processors like Stripe or Adyen, ACH and RTP rails through your bank partner, card issuing through a Banking-as-a-Service provider.
- Credit data: bureau pulls for lending, with adverse action workflows.
India
- KYC: Aadhaar eKYC, PAN verification, CKYC and video KYC through licensed providers.
- Data: Account Aggregator for bank statements, plus credit bureau integrations.
- Payments: UPI and payment gateways for collection, e-NACH and UPI AutoPay for repayments.
Ask the team which of these they've integrated before, in production, and how long sandbox-to-live took.

Store policy is a real launch risk. Under Google Play's Financial Services policy, apps offering personal loans must disclose the maximum APR, repayment periods and a representative cost example; loans requiring full repayment within 60 days are not allowed; and in the US, personal loans at 36% APR or higher are prohibited. Loan apps also can't request permissions such as contacts, photos and precise location. In India, only apps on RBI's list of Digital Lending Apps deployed by regulated entities can publish personal loan apps.
Apple reviews finance apps closely too, and expects them to be published by the company offering the service. Your development team should prepare the financial features declaration, data safety form and privacy labels as part of the build, not after a rejection.
A sensible fintech app architecture
Most fintech products we see fit a layered pattern:
- Client apps: iOS and Android (native or Flutter) plus a web app or dashboard, holding no secrets and minimal data.
- API gateway: authentication, rate limiting and request validation in one place.
- Core services: users, accounts, ledger or loan book, and a rules engine for limits and approvals. A double-entry ledger is worth building early if money moves inside your product.
- Integration layer: one adapter per partner (KYC, bureau, payments), so you can switch providers without touching core logic.
- Back office: operations, support and compliance tools with role-based access and audit logs.
- Data and monitoring: event analytics, fraud signals, alerting and immutable logs.
For lending specifically, our guide to lending app development covers borrower apps, the loan origination system and the loan management system in more detail.
How to vet a fintech app development company
| Ask | What a credible answer includes |
|---|---|
| Which financial integrations have you shipped to production? | Named providers, what broke, how long approval took. |
| How do you handle secrets and production access? | A vault, least-privilege access, no shared logins, access removed at offboarding. |
| What will our partner bank or NBFC ask for, and can you support it? | Security questionnaires, architecture diagrams, pen test reports, data flow maps. |
| How do you prepare finance apps for store review? | Specific policy points, declarations and past rejection fixes. |
| How do you test money movement? | Reconciliation tests, idempotent payment calls, failure and retry cases. |
Budget and timeline depend mostly on the number of integrations and how much back-office tooling you need. Our app development cost guide covers the main drivers.
Where fintech builds usually go wrong
- Partner onboarding starts too late. Bank, NBFC and KYC partners often need contracts, due diligence and sandbox approval before any real testing. Start those conversations during design, not after the app is built.
- The back office is an afterthought. Support, operations and compliance teams need tools to look up users, reverse transactions and export records. If these aren't scoped, they get built in a panic after launch.
- Edge cases in money movement. Duplicate taps, timeouts, partial failures and webhooks arriving out of order are where balances drift. Insist on idempotent payment calls and daily reconciliation.
- Analytics collects too much. Sending financial details to third-party analytics or ad SDKs creates privacy and policy problems. Define exactly which events and fields leave your systems.

Frequently asked questions
What does a fintech app development company do?
It designs and builds financial apps such as payments, lending, investing or banking products, including the mobile apps, backend, admin tools and integrations with KYC, bank data, payments and credit bureau providers. A good one also builds in the security controls, audit trails and documentation your regulated partners and the app stores will ask for.
How much does it cost to build a fintech app?
Cost depends mostly on the number of integrations, the amount of back-office tooling, and security and compliance work such as penetration testing. A focused MVP with a few integrations costs far less than a full banking or lending platform. Ask for a fixed-price quote against a written scope so you can compare vendors fairly.
Do fintech apps need to be PCI compliant?
If your systems store, process or transmit card data, PCI DSS applies. Most apps shrink their scope by using a processor that tokenizes card details, so raw card numbers never touch their servers. You still need to confirm your obligations with your processor and a qualified assessor; this isn't legal advice.
Can loan apps be published on Google Play?
Yes, if they meet Google Play's Financial Services policy. Personal loan apps must disclose APR, repayment terms and a representative cost example, can't offer loans repayable in 60 days or less, can't access contacts or photos, and in the US can't offer loans at 36% APR or higher. India has additional RBI listing requirements.
How long does it take to develop a fintech app?
A focused fintech MVP often takes a few months, but partner onboarding, sandbox access and compliance reviews can add weeks on top of development. Plan integrations and partner approvals in parallel with design, and build security reviews into the schedule instead of leaving them for the end.
